Amida Buddha (Raigō Style) – Wooden Statue with Gold Gilding & Halo (Sold)

This is an exquisite Japanese Buddhist statue from the Meiji period, finely carved in wood and finished with gold leaf . The sculpture depicts Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha) standing on a richly detailed lotus pedestal , with his right hand raised in the gesture of reassurance (semui-in) and his left hand extended in the gesture of welcome (yogan-in), classic to the Raigō posture.

The Amida figure features a calm, meditative expression and finely detailed robe folds, with remnants of original gold gilding showing age-appropriate wear. The head is adorned with indigo-blue pigment, a typical stylistic trait of Meiji-period Buddhist sculpture. Behind the figure is an elaborate radiant halo (kōhai / ) constructed with radial metal lines and a circular mandorla at the center, symbolizing enlightenment.

The lotus pedestal is multi-tiered, carved with intricate designs including wave and floral motifs. The back of the base shows signs of historical repairs and dark lacquer retouching, further adding to its historical value. Acquired from a temple, this is a genuine religious artifact and a superb example of Meiji-period Buddhist artistry.
