Antique Inkstone Box 'Suzuribako' with painting of old Japan scenery, Gold Maki-e the Japanese method of gold plated. This antique Inkstone box (Suzuri-bako) from the Edo period is a striking example of Japan's lauded craftsmanship. Collectable one.
The main decorative element is a stunning gold Maki-e design depicting old Japanese scenery, mountains, pine trees, cherry blossoms, river, houses. The pine tree is symbol of a sacred tree in which God dwells and the whole scenery represent the elegance of the Edo period
The box features a unique "Nashiji" lacquer outside, named after its resemblance to the skin of a pear. This lacquer is meticulously layered with a mix of sand and silver particles, creating a textured surface with a lustrous sheen.
The technique of gold Maki-e involves fixing gold powder or foil onto lacquer to create intricate designs. This lavish art form, with its vibrant colors and rich texture, lends an unmistakable air of opulence to the piece.
This inkstone box also features abundant use of Taka Maki-e, a technique that adds thickness to the Maki-e itself in order to create a three-dimensional effect. Taka Maki-e requires significantly more skill and effort compared to regular Maki-e, as it aims to enhance the sense of depth and dimension in the design.
Despite some age-related wear, scuff marks, and cracks, the inkstone box retains its luxurious beauty. Please refer to the images for details.
