A charming antique Japanese ko-tansu ( / small chest), crafted in solid wood with original iron fittings. This traditional jidai-tansu dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period, showcasing the refined balance of functionality and decorative appeal characteristic of Japanese cabinetry.

The chest features a practical arrangement of multiple drawers and a small locking compartment. The iron hardware is elaborately shaped with floral and cloud motifs, retaining a rich dark patina that enhances the warm tone of the aged lacquered wood. The drawers open smoothly and the compartment door retains its working original key, a rare detail that adds to the authenticity and collector’s value of the piece.

The exterior bears a naturally distressed surface with areas of wear, reflecting long decades of careful use, which contributes to its wabi-sabi charm. The side handles allow for mobility, while the compact size makes this chest ideal for modern interiors, serving as a decorative storage cabinet, display piece, or functional furniture.
