Ishibashi Yushi(1957-) — Saikoku Seiji Tsubo — Carved and Coloured Celadon Vase with Original Tomobako Box
A work of exceptional refinement by Ishibashi Yushi, a full member and director of the Japan Kōgei Association , a Kyoto Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder, and one of the most decorated figures in contemporary Japanese celadon ceramics.
He is celebrated for his signature saikoku seiji technique — a distinctive method combining the classical beauty of celadon glazing with incised surface decoration and polychrome coloured enamel accents.
The vase presents a generous, well-balanced ovoid body with a gently narrowed neck and a quietly refined form that invites the eye to linger on its surface.
The vessel is enveloped in a luminous celadon glaze — the cool, jade-like green that has been one of the most revered glazes in East Asian ceramic history — rendered in Ishibashi's characteristic rich and layered manner.
Into this glazed surface, the artist has incised (koku — ) intricate linear or organic patterns, which are then heightened with colour (sai — ), creating a subtle interplay of texture, depth, and hue across the vessel's body.
The result is a surface of remarkable visual complexity: the carved lines catch the light differently from varied angles, while the restrained colour accents bring warmth and life to the cool celadon ground without disturbing its essential serenity.
The vase is presented in its original signed wooden presentation box (tomobako), forming a complete collector's set.

Artist Profile Ishibashi Yushi(1957-)
Born in Tokyo in 1957, Ishibashi Yushi graduated from the ceramics programme of the Tekisui Museum of Art Research Institute in 1981, then established his kiln in Kyoto Prefecture in 1984, where he has worked ever since. He is a full member and director of the Japan Kōgei Association , and was designated a Kyoto Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder in 2015.
He is regarded as the foremost living practitioner of the saikoku ( — carved and coloured) technique in Japanese ceramics — an approach in which deeply incised surface patterns are combined with polychrome enamel colouring to create works of layered visual depth. His preferred ground is celadon (seiji), though he also works in rurihi (lapis-blue) and shiji (purple) glazed bodies.
His work has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award (, 2010), the Japan Kōgei Association Award (, 2006), and the Japan Kōgei Association Encouragement Award (, 2001 and 2014), among many others. His works have entered the collections of the Imperial Household Agency (, 2011 and 2020), the Agency for Cultural Affairs (, 2001 and 2010), and major public museums.
