Artist Profile
Kanatani Joun was born in 1933 in Takaoka City and became a member of the Japan Craft Association in 1958. For over 40 years at Hannya Foundry, Kanatani dedicated himself to creating bronze braziers and tea ceremony utensils, mastering traditional techniques.
Kanatani specializes in crafting various styles of braziers. Beyond braziers, he creates lid rests, tea utensils sets, and flower vases. His works are renowned for their beautiful surface finishes and meticulous attention to detail. He frequently collaborated with Living National Treasure kettle maker Takahashi Keiten, and these collaborative sets are highly sought after in the market.
Takahashi Keiten was born in 1920 in Yamagata City and inherited the family casting business in 1938, dedicating himself exclusively to tea kettle production. He achieved his first acceptance to the Nitten exhibition in 1951 and was selected seven times thereafter. His innovative forms combined with refined surface textures and patterns earned him numerous awards. In 1961, he created a presentation kettle for the Emperor, and in 1979, another for the Crown Prince. He received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fourth Class in 1992, and in 1996, became the first person from Yamagata Prefecture to be designated as a Living National Treasure for tea ceremony kettles. He promoted Yamagata casting nationwide through exhibitions from the 1960s onward. Takahashi passed away in June 2009 at age 89, leaving an enduring legacy in tea ceremony metalwork.
