This piece has found its home. It is kept here as a record of what has passed through our hands.
A collection of etchings, “Four Crows,” from the 1990s by Kayama Matazo (1927–2004) — one of the great Japanese-style (Nihonga) painters of the postwar era, known for uniting classical Japanese decorative tradition with a modern, graphic sensibility.
Kayama's crows are a recurring, almost calligraphic motif in his work: spare black forms that carry the whole weight of the image. His paintings are held in major Japanese museum collections, and he was a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
