This piece has found its home. It is kept here as a record of what has passed through our hands.

Presented here is a remarkable full set of Japanese samurai armor (yoroi), crafted during the Taishō period (early 20th century), in the traditional style of earlier eras. This life-sized suit, measuring approximately 135 cm in height, is a meticulously assembled example of period-authentic design and detail, complete with distinctive elements that reflect the enduring warrior culture of Japan.

The kabuto (helmet) is of the Akoda-nari (melon-shaped) style, featuring a jūniken hoshi kabuto (twelve-plate helmet) construction, reinforced with riveted boss-like protrusions (hoshi) and adorned with a dragon-themed maedate (helmet crest)—a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, and martial prowess. At its center is a finely detailed circular gilt ornament, giving the piece a commanding presence.

The menpō (faceplate) is forged in iron, finished in black lacquer, and fitted with a realistic hair mustache for dramatic expression. The dō (cuirass) is composed of iron horizontal lamellae and showcases smooth lacquerwork. The kusazuri (tassets), haidate (thigh guards), and suneate (shin guards) are all matched in style and color, with rich brocade fabric underlays decorated with traditional motifs.

The kote (sleeves) exhibit a refined integration of lacquered iron splints over an ornate textile base, interwoven with mail (kusari), showcasing the craftsmanship of the period. Inside the armor fabric, an inscription reads “ ” (Satsuma-jū Kōnin saku), indicating that it was made by the craftsman Kōnin of Satsuma—a region historically renowned for its skilled armorers and warrior tradition.

Though created in the Taishō period, the armor strictly follows the aesthetics and construction methods of the Edo period, making it ideal for collectors seeking authenticity combined with comparatively better preservation. There are minor signs of age and use, such as fraying and surface wear, but overall, the piece remains in good display condition and is structurally sound.

A captivating and rare find for collectors, martial historians, or institutions interested in the legacy of Japan’s samurai class.
Note: Yoroi-kake (display stand) is not included.
