Tamaoki Yasuo(1941-)
This exceptional stoneware vessel is a masterwork of Aka-Shino (Red Shino) glaze in the distinctive kakewake (divided-glaze) style, created by Tamaoki Yasuo, a designated Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture. The piece takes the form of a compressed, multi-lobed gourd-shaped jar — a bold sculptural interpretation far removed from conventional vase forms — with a small circular mouth opening at the top.
The surface is a breathtaking interplay of rich, mahogany-red feldspathic glaze and deeply textured unglazed iron-rich clay body in dark chocolate brown. The kakewake technique — meaning "divided application" — creates dramatic sweeping boundaries between the creamy-red Shino areas and the rough, crawled bare clay, producing a landscape-like abstract composition that shifts dramatically with each angle of view. Characteristic Shino pinholes and crawled glaze texture animate the surface with depth and tactile richness.
The base reveals a deeply atmospheric Aka-Shino glaze patch with rich orange-red firing effects and the artist's impressed seal. The accompanying signed wooden box (tomobako) is inscribed "Aka-Shino Kakewake-tsubo" confirming the title and technique.
A rare and powerful work from one of the foremost Shino and Oribe masters working today.

Artist Profile Tamaoki Yasuo(1941-)was born in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, into a family with a long tradition of kiln work. Initially aspiring to become a graphic designer, he encountered Momoyama-period Mino Oribe ceramics at an exhibition in Tokyo and was so profoundly moved that he changed course entirely. He studied at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Research Institute under the fifth-generation Kato Kobei and Kato Kozo. He went on to receive the Japan Ceramics Society Award (1980), the Tokai Traditional Craft Grand Prix (1984), and numerous other prestigious honors. Designated a Tajimi City Intangible Cultural Property in 2002 and a Gifu Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property in 2008, Tamaoki is celebrated for his innovative approach to Aka-Shino (Red Shino), Shino, Oribe, and Kiseto wares, combining deep respect for Momoyama-era tradition with bold, graphic contemporary design sensibility.
