This piece has found its home. It is kept here as a record of what has passed through our hands.
This is an exceptional Bizen ware flower vase created by Yamamoto Izuru (, 1932-2011), son of the renowned Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshiu.
Crafted from distinctive Burgundy clay (-), this piece showcases the unique characteristics of Bizen pottery combined with the artist's innovative approach to clay composition.
The vase features an organic, sculptural form that reflects Yamamoto Izuru's mastery of the Bizen tradition while pushing artistic boundaries.
The Burgundy clay creates a rich, warm surface texture with natural variations in color and firing effects characteristic of authentic Bizen ware.
The piece demonstrates the natural ash glazing and flame markings achieved through extended wood-firing in the traditional anagama kiln.
Yamamoto Izuru inherited his father's dedication to the Bizen tradition while developing his own artistic voice.
This flower vase exemplifies his skill in creating functional art pieces that serve as both vessels and sculptural objects.
The asymmetrical form and natural earth tones make it equally suitable for ikebana arrangements or as a standalone decorative object.
The piece comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) and protective cloth (tomokin), authenticating its provenance and ensuring proper preservation.
This is a significant work from an important second-generation Bizen potter who maintained the highest standards of his father's legacy.

Artist Profile
Yamamoto Izuru (, 1932-2011) was a distinguished Bizen pottery artist and the son of Yamamoto Toshiu, who was designated as a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho) in 1987. Born in Okayama Prefecture, Izuru grew up immersed in the Bizen pottery tradition and trained extensively under his father's guidance.
While honoring the traditional Bizen techniques passed down through generations, Yamamoto Izuru developed his own artistic approach, experimenting with different clay compositions including the distinctive Burgundy clay. He was known for his sculptural sensibility and ability to create pieces that bridged functional pottery and fine art.
Throughout his career, Izuru participated in numerous exhibitions and his works are held in private collections both in Japan and internationally. He continued the Yamamoto family's commitment to preserving and evolving the ancient Bizen pottery tradition until his passing in 2011.
